User Interface Overview
The Resolve Insights interface provides you with access to key product functionalities, such as visualizing inventory data and network topologies, managing discovery, creating reports, managing applications, and syncing data with ITSM.
After logging in, a dashboard opens, consisting of three main components: Workspace (the working area taking up most of the screen), Main Menu (the menu strip above the Workspace), and Navigation Menu (the pane to the left of the Workspace).
Workspace
This is the area where you can work and explore all modules and statistics within the Insights application.
Main Menu
The Main Menu provides access to several Insights options: Selecting an Organization (usually the company name), Selecting a Site (one of the organizations's data centers), Clock, Regional Time Zone, User Profile, and Notifications.
Navigation Menu
The Navigation Menu provides access to several core modules: Settings, Dashboard, Discovery, Inventory, Data Explorer, Topology, Device Group, Applications, Reports, Storage, and vCenter.
Settings
In this view, you can manage users and roles, as well as configure settings for email, service signature definition, and external integrations.
For more information, refer to the Administrator Settings section.
Dashboard
The Dashboard is the first page you will see when you log in to Insights. Here, you can view the overall health of each critical application infrastructure service and keep track of everything in near-real time. You can also visualize and optimize the value of application infrastructure resources.
For more information, refer to the Dashboard section.
Discovery
In this view, you can schedule the discovery of devices (Compute, Network, and Storage) and service components running in data centers and cloud environments (AWS, Azure). You can also schedule service availability and discover application flows, allowing you to monitor infrastructure entities and applications. Discovery can be done on a targeted, per-device basis, over multiple IP ranges, by FQDN, or by subnet, or bulk discovery of a large number of devices in a single discovery operation.
Once devices have been discovered using the authenticated discovery type, they are added to the Inventory.
For more information, refer to the Run Device Discovery section.
Inventory
Here, you can view the details of discovered devices, as well as explore further details through various views such as Table View, Device View, and IP Address View. You can also view the details of hidden devices and Configuration Management Database (CMDB) pull requests.
For more information, refer to the Inventory section.
Data Explorer
This view enables you to explore the hierarchy, composition, and relationship of discovered entities within your hybrid IT environment.
For more information, refer to the Explorer section.
Topology
The Topology module represents the discovered entities connected based on Insights discovery algorithms, showing physical and logical network connections, as well as Hypervisor-to-VM relationships. You can also view the details of all disconnected components.
For more information, refer to the Topology section.
Device Groups
The Device Groups view allows you to group devices based on various criteria in accordance with your specific business needs. Here, you can view, create, modify, and delete device groups, as well as combine them into device group categories for an even more detailed overview of your system.
For more information, refer to the Groups section.
The filters are only visible if there are existing Device Groups and Categories in your Insights instance.
Applications
The Applications module allows you to create business application entities, such as application services and flows, dynamically or manually, in both physical and virtual environments. You can group applications into Business processes, correlating Business KPIs with the underlying application and infrastructure entities.
For more information, refer to the Applications section.
Reports
In the Reports module, you can generate and manage scheduled and on-demand reports necessary for monitoring the system and network health and for troubleshooting network problems.
For more information, refer to the Reports section.
Storage
The Storage module provides an entry point for viewing resources and relationships between different storage components. It offers a complete summary of the inventory in your storage system. Insights provides end-to-end mapping of your storage environment, so you can see how your storage devices and servers are connected.
vCenter
The vCenter module allows you to monitor and manage resources used by Hyper-V nodes, ESXi servers, and virtual machines to help you understand your virtualized domain and optimize it based on data collected by Insights. You can view all virtual machines available to the host (ESXi server) that Insights has detected, their allocated capacity, and all of the data stores accessible by the host.
Using Clock
The clock displays the last refreshed date and time to which the displayed data corresponds. Insights automatically refreshes data every ten minutes.
- To refresh data manually, click the refresh/reload icon in the clock panel.
- To refresh data automatically, click the play icon.
- To pause the auto-refresh, click the pause icon that will be visible after you have pressed play.
- To change the refresh interval, select a different value from the drop-down.
Changing Regional Time Zone
You can view and change the time zone of Insights using the Regional Time Zone option. To view/change the time zone:
- Click the Continent/City name in the Main Menu. Your current time zone will be displayed.
- To change the time zone, hover over the world map and select the time zone you want to set.
The Regional Time Zone setting is global for the entire organization, meaning all its sites (in case there is more than one).
Updating License
After logging in to Insights, you can update the license key from the dashboard.
Click the profile icon.
In the drop-down, click Update License.
This will open a dialog box.
In the respective field, enter the license key provided to you by your Resolve representative.
Click Update.
