Run a Device Discovery

One of the key features of Insights is its ability to discover devices in your environment without requiring agents. The functionality applies to:

  1. Known Environment: You already know the devices in your environment.
  2. Unknown Environment: You are unsure about the devices in a specific network.

Discovery of a Single Device

When you know the devices in your environment, you can run a network discovery and schedule a discovery to find a specific device.

To perform device discovery, ensure you have the following:

  1. Protocol: SNMP, SSH, Telnet, Pywinrm, or an API for native device discovery.
  2. Credentials: A username/password or a service account with the necessary access permissions for the selected protocol.
  3. IP Information: A specific IP address or an IP range to target for discovery.

Detailed Steps

To view the detailed steps, visit Run a Device Discovery. The simplified version is:

  1. Visit Discovery > Device Discovery > Local Device.
  2. Select the Organization and Site for discovery.
  3. Choose a protocol (e.g., SSH).
  4. Provide credentials: select a Service Account or enter the username and password.
  5. Enter the device's IP address under the FQDN/IP list.
  6. Click Start.
  7. Name the discovery (e.g., "Single Device Discovery").

Viewing the Discovery

After scheduling the discovery, it will appear under the In-progress tab for the selected site. The discovery process may take a few minutes to start. Once the device data is collected, the discovery job will automatically move to the Completed tab, and the device will appear in the Inventory menu.

To avoid entering a username and password for each device in the future, you can create a Service Account for this type of discovery and reuse it for multiple discoveries.

Subnet Discovery

You can run a bulk discovery for unknown environments to scan an entire subnet and identify as many devices as possible.

To do this:

  1. Enter the IP range of the subnet.
  2. Select all available Service Accounts.
  3. Insights will automatically try each Service Account for every device in the subnet to identify them.

Additionally, you can schedule device discoveries to ensure Insights periodically checks the device and updates its data. For more information, visit Bulk Discovery.
