Pushing Data to the CMDB System

Insights allows you to push all discovered infrastructure and business application data into your CMDB system. It supports integration with ITSM providers such as ServiceNow and Cherwell.

Configure CMDB Connection and Mapping

  1. Configure the ITSM Connection
    • Obtain administrator privileges and gather your ITSM settings and structure.
    • Follow the documentation to configure the ITSM connection.
  2. Choose the Data Push Type
    • Decide between manual, automatic, or scheduled data pushes.
    • Start with a manual push to verify the CMDB mappings are correct and the data appears properly in your CMDB system.
    • Once verified, you can enable automatic or scheduled pushes.
  3. Create CMDB Mappings
    • After completing the ITSM configuration, create CMDB mappings to define how data from Insights will be mapped to your CMDB system.
    • Insights provides pre-defined mappings for common use cases, but you can modify them or create new mappings to meet your specific needs.
  4. Under the CMDB Mapping Categories
    • The mappings are divided into three categories: Devices, Services, and Applications.
  5. Define Mapping Details
    • For each mapping, specify the CMDB tables and fields where the Insights data should go, the type of data, and the data source.
  6. Test the Mappings
    • Before pushing any data to the CMDB system, thoroughly test all mappings to ensure data is correctly mapped and appears as expected.

Push a Device

Once your ITSM configuration is complete and CMDB mappings are verified, you can begin pushing Insights data to your CMDB system.

Start with a manual push of device data, including information about the services running on it. To do this:

  1. Navigate to Inventory > Table View > Device.
  2. Select the device you want to push by checking the checkbox next to it.
  3. Click the Settings (gear) butotn, choose Push to CMDB > All Selected Device/s, and enter a human-readable name for the request.
  4. Submit the request.

After the push is initiated, you can track its status under Inventory > CMDB Schedule. Clicking on the request will show the devices pushed and the status for each. Hovering over the status will display additional details.

If the push is successful, the device will appear int he CMDB system, the Last CMDB Update Time field will be updated in the inventory. The data pushed generally includes:

  • Device technical details (e.g., hostname, number of CPUs, platform)
  • Service details (e.g., names of running services)
  • Linkage details (e.g., parent-child relationships)

Push an Application

For Cherwell ITSM users, Insights can also push application-related data, specifically the relationship between applications and devices, into the CMDB system. This uses the application CMDB mapping.

To manually push application data:

  1. Navigate to Inventory > Table View > Application.
  2. Select the application you want to push.
  3. Click the Settings (gear) button, choose Push to CMDB, and enter a human-readable name for the request.

Once the push request is made, it will appear in the CMDB Schedule section, where you can monitor its status. If the push is successful, the applicaiton data will appear in the CMDB system, and the Last CMDB Updated field for the application will be updated in the inventory.
