Device Groups

Overview

Resolve Insights enables you to group devices according to your specific business needs. You can create a device group that includes devices from a specific vendor, based on a specific platform, using a particular module, or adhering to a specific naming convention.

Device groups can in turn be combined into device group categories. You can later use the device groups and categories to filter the view in the Dashboard, Inventory, and Topology sections.

Creating a Device Group

To create a new device group:

  1. Navigate to Device Groups > Add Device Group.
The Add Device Group configuration panel opens.
  2. In the Name field, enter a name for the group.
  3. (Optional) In Group Category, do either of the following:
    • Select an existing category to include the new group in.
    • Type a name in the text box to create a new category and assign it to the group.
      note

To delete a device category group, unassociate or delete all device groups that are associated with it.

  4. In the Group Filters section, use any of the three ways to specify search criteria to match the devices that you want to include in the group. The three areas interact disjunctively (logical OR).
    • Under Device Filter, click Open. In the new dialog that opens, select a criterion (Device Type, Device Location, and so on) from the list and match it against a value using logical operators. To remove any applied device filters, click Clear.
      • You can add multiple criteria by clicking the + button below the filter and combine them by selecting an AND/OR condition. To delete a criterion, click the X icon on the right.
      • You can also add multiple filter groups by clicking the Add group button in the same configuration dialog. Like the individual criteria within a group, filter groups can also be combined using an AND/OR condition.
    • In Device Group Filter, select one or more preexisting device groups to include in the new group.
    • In the Custom Query Filter field, you can type your own Lucene query.
  5. Click Create to create the group.

The new dynamic device group will be created and the selected devices will be added to it.

Modifying a Device Group

You can modify all configurations of a device group as well as apply additional actions on the settings of the devices included in a group.

To modify a device group:

  1. In the Device Groups list with available groups, click the edit (pencil) icon under Actions in the row of the group you want to modify.
  2. Select Device Group.
The device group configuration panel opens.
  3. Modify the group as desired.
  4. Click Save.

Modifying a Group's Device Settings

You can also apply certain actions to modify some of the settings of the devices that are part of a group. To do that, take these steps:

  1. In the Device Groups list with available groups, click the edit (pencil) icon under Actions in the row of the group you want to modify.
  2. Select Device Settings.
  3. Manage the options as follows:
    • Device Visibility—Enable it to hide/unhide all devices that match the group’s criteria and click the radio button for Hide or Unhide depending on what you want to do. Since the group is dynamic, newly discovered devices that match the group will be automatically hidden/unhidden as well.
    • Device Address—Enable it to update the physical location of the group’s devices (the Address column that is added from Inventory > Table View > Columns).
    • Device Custom Values—Enable it to update a column in the Device View in your Inventory. Select the column and enter the custom value.
  4. Click Save.

Deleting a Device Group

To delete a device group:

To delete a device category group, unassociate or delete all device groups that are associated with it.

  1. In the Device Groups list with available groups, click the delete (bin) icon under Actions in the row of the group you want to delete.
  2. Confirm the deletion.

Filtering by Device Group and Category

You can get a more refined view of the data displayed in the Dashboard, Inventory, and Topology screens by filtering by Device Group and Category. In these three screens, you will find the Category and Group filters in the Main Menu at the top.

note

The filters are only visible if there are existing Device Groups and Categories in your Insights instance.

The Device Groups and Categories drop-down lists are independent. Device Groups always lists all existing groups regardless of your selection in Categories.

You can only filter by one category or one group at a time. If a category is selected and you then select a group, the category filter will be cleared and the results will be filtered by the selected group, and vice versa.

For example, if you select a specific category on the Inventory page, the view will only show devices included in the device groups associated with this category, in this case "Virtual".
